Cutting openings is the part of a carpet installation that deserves the most patience. An opening can be enlarged, but missing material is difficult to hide. The goal is to locate each component accurately while preserving the coverage needed beneath trim.
This is a general planning guide for replacement automotive carpet. Follow the specific kit instructions and vehicle service manual for your application, including any multi-piece layout and mounting requirements.
Make an opening map
Before cutting, list the components that pass through or attach over the carpet: seat mounts, belt anchors, shifter assemblies, console brackets and any vehicle-specific vents or trim. Photograph their locations with the old carpet removed. Separate factory mounting points from unused accessory holes so you do not reproduce unnecessary cuts.
For each opening, answer three questions: what must pass through, what covers the edge, and what needs unobstructed access for assembly? If you cannot answer one, pause that opening and consult the relevant instructions.
Use the old carpet as a reference
Lay the original piece beside the replacement and compare the arrangement of openings. ACC notes that some applications use the old carpet as a template for console cuts. Check that the original has not been stretched, patched or modified before relying on it.
Make tentative marks on the backing with a suitable marking tool, away from visible pile. Recheck the marks in the vehicle. A flattened piece on a workbench does not show every relationship it will have once fitted around the floor.
Check console coverage before enlarging
Position the console or its relevant trim for a coverage check when the service procedure allows it. Confirm which parts of the carpet will remain visible. Avoid assuming the console base will conceal every cut: a narrow lip may leave little room for error.
Support the material where you work and keep the blade away from hidden wiring, padding and vehicle surfaces. Make small adjustments and inspect between them. Stop if an opening seems to require unexpectedly removing a large area; an alignment error or wrong application deserves investigation first.
Finish mounting areas and outer edges
Use the vehicle's instructions to determine the required clearance around mounting hardware. Do not improvise changes to seat or belt attachments to accommodate the carpet. After assembly, inspect for trapped material and confirm that seats and controls operate freely.
Photograph the completed openings before covering them. Those photos can make future maintenance easier and provide a useful record if a bracket or console is removed later.
