The Mid-Fifties Question: Are Your Trunk Boards Still Good?

For 1955 and 1956 Mercury owners, every other choice comes after this one. The Custom, Montclair and Monterey Burtex trunk mats are each sold two ways: a three-piece mat set without boards, or a six-piece kit with boards. The boards are the rigid panels that give these trunks their flat floor and finished side walls, and many are now warped, water-stained or gone. If yours are solid, the three-piece set in Burtex, the woven plaid material restorers know from era catalogs, refreshes the compartment. If the boards are rough, the six-piece kit replaces mat and panels together and saves hunting down boards separately. The split applies to convertibles and to hardtop and sedan bodies alike, so confirm your body style on the listing. A final 1958 Montclair Burtex set, three pieces, closes out the fifties range.

Comet Carries the Sixties

Comet is the volume line here, organized by year bands rather than one long run. The 1960 car takes a one-piece mat in Burtex, fleece or vinyl. The 1961 to 1963 mats grow to two pieces, again across the three materials, and the 1964 to 1965 hardtop and convertible listings return to one piece. The 1966 to 1967 Comet is fleece only, in four pieces, the largest Comet set in the collection. Along the way the Meteor appears for 1962 to 1963, including the S-33 2-door hardtop, and the 1965 Montclair 2-door fastback gets a three-piece fleece set.

Muscle-Era Mercury: Cyclone and Cougar

  • Cyclone starts with 1966 to 1967 hardtop vinyl mats, standard and GT, then GT mats for 1968 to 1969 and 1970 to 1971.
  • Cougar coupes take a vinyl mat for 1967 to 1968 and again for 1969 to 1970.
  • The 1969 to 1970 Cougar convertible has its own mat, separate from the coupe.
  • A combined 1971 to 1973 coupe and convertible mat finishes the Cougar run.
  • Montego GT closes the collection with fleece or vinyl mats for 1972 to 1973.
