Loop Through 1973, Cutpile From 1974

Caprice carpet follows the factory material changeover exactly, and getting it right is the first mark of a correct restoration. Kits for 1966-1973 cars are loop, ACC's 100 percent 6.6 nylon at 20 ounces per square yard, the material GM used before 1974. From 1974-1976 on, the kits switch to cutpile, a softer 14-ounce nylon that stayed original through the end of production. Every early kit in this collection is a 2-piece molding and every kit from 1977 on is 1 piece, another quick check that you are looking at the right generation before you compare colors.

The Early Cars Split by Body and Transmission

For 1966-1970, one Caprice floor does not fit all. The 2-door automatic, 4-door automatic and 4-door wagon automatic cars each have their own loop kit, and the single manual offering, a 1966-1969 2-door 4-speed without console, exists because the shifter hole and tunnel shape differ from the automatic cars. The wagon kit is a one-year-range body of its own, not a sedan kit with extra material. The 1971-1973 range narrows to 2-door automatic and 4-door hardtop or sedan automatic, still loop, still 2 pieces.

Downsized 1977-1990 and the Rounded 1991-1996 Cars

The downsized B-body simplified the catalog. A 1977-1987 2-door kit and a 1977-1990 4-door kit, both 1-piece cutpile, cover the box Caprice years that served families, fleets and police departments, which is why so many survivors need carpet now. The final 1991-1996 4-door kit fits the rounded body shared with the 9C1 police package cars and the Impala SS era. These are big, flat floors that show every wrinkle, so the molded fit, original-style padding and factory-applied heel pad matter more here than on smaller cars.

Ordering a Full-Size Floor

Order all of your carpet at one time, because dye lots vary and a later reorder may not match exactly. Compare samples against an unfaded section under the rear seat if your color is not black. Let the kit relax out of the box, trial-fit it over the old carpet's outline, and mark seat and belt openings before trimming, since molded kits arrive without precut holes and some edge trimming is normal.
