The most common mistake in a Cougar trunk is ordering the Mustang mat. The two cars share a platform, but concours judges and forum regulars identify an original Cougar mat by details no Mustang mat has: the opening for a gas filler neck mounted in the rear tail panel, wheel well contours that differ from the Mustang's, and a longer run of material down the passenger side. A Mustang mat in a Cougar trunk leaves gaps at the wells and puts the filler opening in the wrong place.
Body style splits the range in two places
Order by body first, year second. There is no 1967-1968 convertible mat here because Mercury built no Cougar convertible until 1969, so the first listing is coupe only. For 1969-1970 the coupe and convertible are separate mats: the folding top well reshapes the front of the convertible's trunk, and the coupe mat will not lay correctly over it. The 1971-1973 cars were larger, on a 112-inch wheelbase, and ACC covers that generation with a single mat listed for both coupe and convertible.
One piece of vinyl, cut for this floor
Every mat in this collection is a single piece of replacement vinyl, die cut to the Cougar trunk floor for its listed years. Vinyl is the practical choice in a trunk that sees a spare tire, a jack, and the occasional leak: it wipes clean and does not hold moisture against the floor the way a soaked fabric mat can. Before the new mat goes in, pull the old one, check the floor and filler neck area for rust, and fix any water entry at the trunk seal or tail panel first. Keep the removed mat beside the car while you trial fit the new one, confirm the spare tire and hold-down stay reachable, and only then make any final trim.
Which listing is yours
- 1967-1968 coupe: the coupe mat for the first-generation cars.
- 1969-1970 coupe or convertible: pick your body style; the two mats are not interchangeable.
- 1971-1973 coupe or convertible: the shared mat for the second-generation car.
Each listing is the trunk floor mat only. Side panels, spare tire covers, and insulation are separate items, so review the product page contents before ordering if you are rebuilding the trunk.
