Decision one: the boards
Mid-fifties Mercury trunks were not floored with mat alone. Flat support boards sat on the raised sections of the trunk floor on either side, bridging the gap out to the inner fenders, and the Burtex liner laid over them. Without sound boards the liner sags into those gaps and tears at the edges. So the first question is what is in your trunk now. If the original boards are solid, order the three-piece set without boards and reuse them. If they are warped, water-stained, or missing entirely, order the six-piece set with boards and replace the foundation in one job.
Decision two: body style
Convertible and hardtop/sedan trunks are cut differently, and the listings keep them apart for both board options. A 2-door convertible takes its own mat set; hardtops and sedans share the other. Match the listing to the car in the garage, not to a Ford of the same year: these are Mercury patterns, and ordering by the wrong body style is the most common reason a set goes back in the box.
All four listings cover 1955-1956 only; later Monterey trunks use different patterns and are listed separately.
Why Burtex, and how to spot the real thing
Burtex was Ford Motor Company's stamped-pattern trunk material of the period, and the plaid designs were a signature of 1950s Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln trunks. It is also where cheap substitutes give themselves away. Concours judges on the Shelby and Mustang forums make the same point: ACC reproduces the OE material with its natural fiber backing, while incorrect mats are black on the bottom. Flip any Burtex mat over before you install it. The back should look like fiber, not black coating.
Fitting the set
Work with the trunk empty and dry. Set the boards first on a with-boards order, then lay the mat pieces over them and compare against the original material that came out of the car. Check for moisture and rust in the floor and around the spare tire well before anything goes down; a new liner over a wet floor traps the problem. Keep access to the spare and jack, let the pieces settle flat, and make any trim adjustments only after the full set is sitting where it belongs.
